Geography
“Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. Geography is a great adventure with a purpose”
Michael Palin
Intent
At Beaumont Primary Academy our Geography intent is for our children to be given learning opportunities which inspire curiosity and fascination and allow pupils to explore and understand the world in which we live. We intend to provide a broad Geography curriculum which aims to teach skills and deepen children’s understanding of geography. Children should be inspired to enquire and develop an interest in their local area. We hope children will be proud of Huddersfield and develop an understanding of the features in our area e.g. Beaumont Park, Castle Hill, Ingbirchworth Reservoir, Huddersfield’s canals and transport networks. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about our local area, as well as places within the UK, Europe and the continents in the world. At Beaumont Primary Academy we believe it is important to use observational skills to first study the geography of our school and its grounds and the key human and physical features focusing on the area that children already know, they can gain a solid knowledge of features in a familiar area before building their understanding to study similar or different features in unfamiliar areas.
Implementation
At Beaumont Primary Academy all children, from Nursery to Key Stage 2 learn the following concepts and themes through studying different geographical topics throughout the school:
Concepts:
Understanding our changing and interconnected world
- place
- space
- environment
- interconnection
- scale
- sustainability
- change
Themes
- Map and atlas work
- Human and physical features
- Investigating and field work
In EYFS, children talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another such as the countryside. They make simple maps and are taught how to use positional language. The children observe the different seasons and use associated language to describe the weather. They are encouraged to develop Geographical language by discussing why some things occur, and talk about changes.
In Key Stage 1 children will develop their knowledge about the United Kingdom and their own locality. They’ll learn how to use maps, atlases and globes as well as learn simple compass directions. The children will also study seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom and look at the hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the equator and the North and South Poles. In addition, a contrasting non-European country will be studied. Children will be taught how to use geographical vocabulary and complete fieldwork.
During Key Stage 2 at Beaumont Primary
In Key Stage 2 the children will look to extend their knowledge to beyond their local area to locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom. They will study Europe (including Russia) as well as North and South America and identify the position and significance of the lines of longitude and latitude. They will look at similarities and differences of human geography such as types of settlement and land use. They will also study physical geography elements such as climate zones, biomes, vegetation belts, rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes and the water cycle. Children will continue to use maps, atlases and globes and will use the 8 points of the compass in their work. They will use four and six figure grid references and ordinance survey maps. They will refine their fieldwork skills.
Teaching
Flexible groupings are used during lessons e.g. ability and mixed ability groups, paired work, guided and independent work and whole class work. Opportunities to develop core literacy skills are exploited through geographical inquiries as well as the learning of new vocabulary. A range of resources are used to enhance learning including using a variety of maps, atlases, globes, watching videos and reading information texts.
Impact
At Beaumont Primary Academy, we believe that through our high-quality geography education pupils are instilled with a curiosity and fascination about the world that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We believe that if our geography curriculum is taught, then pupils will be equipped with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human
Our Geography curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. We focus on progression of knowledge and skills with discreet vocabulary progression also forming part of the units of work. Children will deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes and how this affects landscapes and environments.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Assessing children’s understanding of topic linked vocabulary before and after the unit is taught.
- Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning.
- Images and videos of the children’s practical learning.
- Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
- Moderation staff meetings where pupil’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
- Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum.
- Marking of written work in books.
